ReVolt Energy and the Permian Energy Development Lab to Collaborate on Project to Recover and Recycle Solar Technology
Project Helios at PEDL Lands will advance cutting-edge technologies to convert end-of-life solar panels into resources for new uses
Yoakum County, Texas—ReVolt Energy, a leading innovator in the recycling of end-of-life solar panels, in collaboration with the Permian Energy Development Laboratory (PEDL), is proud to announce Project Helios, a research and development pilot at PEDL Lands. The project will employ proprietary, fit-for-purpose technology to efficiently disassemble end-of-life solar panels, recovering critical materials for use as resources in other industries.
This milestone marks not just an innovative solution to the problem of solar waste but a broader shift toward integrated energy solutions, rooted in one of the world's most important energy-producing regions.
The ReVolt project is enabled through PEDL’s partnership with Roosevelt Resources, an energy operator with a long history working in the Permian.
A GROUNDBREAKING ENERGY INNOVATION HUB
The Permian Integrated Energy System (PIES) is a flagship initiative of PEDL, a nonprofit consortium launched in 2023 to accelerate innovation across energy, workforce and economic development in the Permian Basin. Located at PEDL Lands, a 320-acre site in Yoakum County, PIES is a field-scale platform that integrates power, produced-water treatment, carbon management and other energy technologies with existing oil and gas infrastructure, creating a model for scalable deployment across the Permian Basin. The integration of energy processes enables the more efficient use of natural resources and thus cleaner energy production.
“PEDL was conceived to bridge innovation and implementation,” said Dr. Derek Adams, Managing Director of PEDL’s PIES initiative. “In collaborating with ReVolt Energy, we see this pilot project at PEDL Lands as the first step in establishing an advanced-technology hub for solar panel recycling and resource reuse in the Permian Basin.”
But PEDL is more than just a technology lab. Its mission spans workforce training, economic development and community resilience—ensuring that the benefits of energy innovation flow to the people and places that make it possible.
ADVANCING ENERGY DEVELOPMENT IN THE PERMIAN BASIN
Project Helios is designed to draw on the vast solar resources – both installed and planned – in the Permian Basin that will reach their end of life over the next few years through hail storms or natural wear. ReVolt also has developed a proprietary software called the Global Solar Waste Tracker, a live forecasting platform that maps where and when panels in and around the Permian Basin (and elsewhere) reach end of life and quantifies the material value embedded in the coming supply of decommissioned panels.
Rather than ending up in landfills or a solar panel graveyard, ReVolt will utilize the solar panels as a resource, recovering their constituent materials for reuse in solar manufacturing and other industries. That includes aluminum and glass, but also electronic grade silicon, silver and copper just to name a few, all of which can be reused, reducing demand for newly extracted raw materials.
ReVolt’s patented technology was developed by in-house experts and combines photonics, robots and advanced manufacturing to create a fully automated, high-integrity recycling solution.
