Permian Energy Development Lab partners with Japanese company to advance innovative energy solutions

Odessa, Texas—The Permian Energy Development Lab has signed a memorandum of understanding with Agile Energy X, a Japanese technology firm, marking an important step in PEDL's effort to attract investment and add specialized technical know-how to the Permian Basin's already-vibrant energy ecosystem.

Agile Energy X is a subsidiary of TEPCO Power Grid, Inc., Japan’s largest electric utility, focused on optimizing energy distribution. By harnessing variable renewable energy sources, the company develops portable, flexible energy solutions. These systems create power demand, transforming excess energy into valuable assets. Agile Energy X aims to bolster local energy production and consumption by tapping into underutilized resources.

“We want PEDL to help energy entrepreneurs turn their ideas into reality. Our partnership with Agile Energy X reflects that goal—and reinforces the Permian Basin's status as a global hub for energy innovation," said Marilu Hastings, founder and president of the PEDL board of directors. “At the end of the day, this is the essence of the Texas-New Mexico spirit: a place where people with bold ideas can build the future."

"We are thrilled to partner with PEDL and contribute to the Permian Basin’s energy ecosystem," said Kenji Tateiwa, CEO of Agile Energy X. "By combining our expertise in flexible energy demand systems with the vast resources and forward-thinking approach of the Permian region, we will create groundbreaking solutions that shape the future of global energy."

The collaboration will focus on AEX's “ultimate circular economy” concept, which aims to create an innovative closed-loop energy system that combines various clean energy technologies like distributed computing and direct air capture together with renewable energy sources like solar and wind. This approach could bolster energy production by minimizing waste and optimizing resource use.

Key points of the memorandum of understanding include:

  • Identifying opportunities that leverage the Permian Basin's status as a center of the global energy economy

  • Using PEDL's network to provide academic, intellectual, and scientific resources to support advanced energy research

  • Connecting PEDL with potential partners in Japan to create mutually beneficial opportunities

  • Developing new energy professionals and entrepreneurs

This agreement builds upon PEDL's growing network of partnerships, which includes agreements with companies such as Composite Recycling, Teverra, SOLARCYCLE and Roosevelt Resources, further solidifying the Permian Basin's position as a leader in advanced energy development.
