NORM Removal Pilot Yields Encouraging Results

Produced Water Pool

As announced earlier in the year, PEDL has partnered with Stochastic Research Technologies (SRT) on a pilot project to remove Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) from produced water. NORM already exists in geologic structures and is released through the oil recovery process. Read more about NORM in this explainer.

SRT has now completed its preliminary report, and the initial results are encouraging. Their sorbent material successfully removed radium from Roosevelt Resources’ produced water under field conditions, giving us a good first demonstration of the technology outside the laboratory.

Additional work remains to better understand the results and determine the most useful next experiments, but this was a positive outcome from the pilot. Phase 2 is planned for later in the year.
